Right after visiting Wind Cave, I headed west about 20 miles to Jewel Cave. This is a National Monument (vs. a National Park) which the Ranger from Wind Cave said is because the National Park designation requires approval from Congress whereas the other designations can be made directly by the President. Jewel Cave was named a National Monument on February 7, 1908 by President Roosevelt.
While I visited the site and visitor’s center, I didn’t feel the need to do two cave tours in one day so opted it of that.
