During my latest trip in Tennessee and Kentucky, I visited a total of three Civil War Battlefields. The first stop was Stones River National Battlefield. The three-day battle at Stones River began on the last day of 1862. On January 1, the Emancipation Proclamation was set to take effect so the battle was key for the Union both moving south into Confederate territory and symbolically given the need to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.
The expansive grounds provided opportunity to see earthen fortresses, a National Cemetery, and the battleground itself.
