Fort Donelson, along the Cumberland River, was a key victory for the Union in February 1862. General Ulysses S. Grant demanded an unconditional surrender from Confederate General Buckner which led to Grant’s promotion as Major General. The many sites, from the earthen fortress built along the river, to the surrender house and National Cemetery were powerful displays of the breadth of the Civil War.
