Meriwether Lewis National Monument

IMG_1254Along the Natchez Trace Parkway, I visited the monument and grave site of Meriwether Lewis (as in Lewis and Clark).

Lewis was headed back to Washington DC when he died here on October 11, 1809. The circumstances of his death are unknown but he died from two gunshot wounds, which many historians say were self-inflicted. The memorial at the grave site is a singular broken shaft, to represent a life cut short.
