On a quick trip to Kansas City for a concert, I made a stop at the Harry S. Truman home in Independence, Missouri. This was his home prior to becoming President and where he returned to live until his death in 1972. After his death, his wife, Bess Truman continued to live in the home for ten more years until her death, leaving most things exactly as they were when he passed. Shortly after her death, the house was given to the United States and named a National Historic Site.

There were no photos allowed inside the house but the home found a way to be both stately and humble, a proud symbol of a Midwestern President. Nothing had been changed in the home since Bess’ death, with both of their overcoats even still hanging near the back door. As a bonus, I think the teal kitchen cabinets are probably back in style now!

A favorite Truman quote: “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog!”
