Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park

IMG_1595Kaloko-Honokohau was a beautiful stop along the tour and preserves the traditional Hawaiian way of life prior to the development of the coastline. Native Hawaiians built fishponds, including the Kaloko fishpond to raise fish that could be distributed throughout their villages. This park celebrates traditional Hawaiian customs, connection to the land, and preservation. Much work has been done over the past two decades to bring the shoreline back to it’s original, pristine condition.

Memorial for a fallen ranger

IMG_1600Something I didn’t expect to find on this stop was a memorial to honor a National Parks Service ranger who was killed on the job at this park. The rangers are often as interesting and varied as the parks I’m visiting, and it’s very sad to think of one losing their life while in service. Rest in peace, Steve Makuakane-Jarrell.
