Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site

The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site was a special stop for me as it marked the 25th stop on my journey. The staff here was wonderful and took us on an informative tour of the home, called White Haven, where Grant’s wife grew up and where they lived together and raised their children. The home has been well-restored and is an insightful look into the past when slaves helped tend to large plantations. Some interesting tid bits about the home: it was painted Paris green, which was a trend at the time, it sat on 850 acres, and the basement kitchen area revealed original wooden logs supporting the floor which had not been milled or treated at all and still had bark along the outside.
