Zion National Park

IMG_3036We spent the most time in Zion National Park and had perfect weather to take in the beauty and sleep under the stars. We camped two nights at Zion and explored various sections of the canyon.

Entering from the east, you’re taken through a mile long tunnel along Mount Carmel Highway, which was completed in 1930. After winding through switchbacks down into the canyon, you head south through the canyon walls toward the Visitor’s Center and campgrounds. Springdale, UT, is just outside the park and serves tourists well with delicious restaurants, various shops and a small town feel.

IMG_3144The canyon is wide and the camping, visitors center and lodge, along with main roads are all within the canyon. This meant constantly looking up in awe of the beauty of the canyon. Different from Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon, the formations jolted straight up and shined brilliantly in the afternoon sun.

We did multiple hikes, including one to Hidden Canyon, which was shortened by my fear of the narrow passes and steep drop off. The hike to three levels of “emerald” ponds was less harrowing and much more my style. There was still a good amount of climb and we were treated with beautiful views of the canyon and waterfalls falling from one level to the next.

This ended up being one of our favorite parks and it was fun to be able to spend so much time exploring the beautiful landscapes.
