Mesa Verde National Park was another stop as we barreled east out of Arizona and into Colorado (with a quick stop at the Four Corners Monument).
While some of the dwelling sites were closed for the winter, we were able to take the 20 mile park road to Spruce Tree House and see the cliff dwellings. The road took us up an down mesas where the plateaus were used by ancient Puebloans for farming and hunting. Driving up and down the winding roads to the plateaus, it was hard to imagine ancient people sustaining their lives here.
