On Monday morning, we visited Arlington National Cemetery. The rolling hills are both beautiful and chilling at the same time. At the top of the hill is the Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial. The house belong to Lee’s wife and her family, though he lived here many years. The land was at that time a plantation, growing crops with stunning views of the Potomac River below.
While at Arlington, we were able to visit the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame and saw the most recent of the Kennedy graves, Edward (Ted) Kennedy, who died in 2009. It was moving to witness the wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown while Taps was played.
The Underground Railroad did not have an official stop at the Arlington House, but many freedom seekers passed through this area while fleeing Virginia or Maryland.
