One of the newest memorials in DC, the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial opened in 2011. The striking sculpture sits along the tidal basin and features Dr. King emerging from a mountain. The words “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope,” a quote from his famous I Have a Dream speech are inscribed on the side of the sculpture.
