An oasis in the bustling city, the African Burial Ground National Monument, was one of the largest  archeological finds. The excavation in the early 90s cause controversy over removal the remains and protestors held 24-hour vigils for an entire year in 1992. A circular, sunken path leads to the peaceful monument. The site also features seven earthen mounds to mark the site where many remains were interred.
