Governors Island is a short Ferry ride from Brooklyn or Manhattan and is only open during the summer months. The island features old fortifications from the 1800s and now serves as a quick getaway and relaxing spot away from the city. It was a warm and beautiful Saturday when I visited and the island was buzzing with families, bicyclists and delicious food trucks.
