The Buffalo National River in Arkansas was the first National River, protected by Congress in 1972 to prevent the damming of the river. The water flows down from the Boston Mountains creating white water rapids that slowly give way to a gently flowing river. We were looking forward to exploring the river on kayak or canoe, but heavy rains halted our plans.
