On this site in Arkansas, a key battle took place that stopped Confederate troops from moving further North to take St. Louis from Union troops.
Unlike most confrontations during the Civil War, this battle included Native American troops fighting on behalf of the confederates. After nearly losing the battle, Union forces retook the key Telegraph Road and forced Confederate troops back South. Following this battle, Confederate troops never again threatened to take Missouri, though Missouri continued to provide arms and troops to both sides throughout the war. Missouri never fell to the Confederate during the Civil War.
