This National Battlefield in South Central Missouri was the first battle of the Civil War in Missouri. The inability of either side to obtain a decisive victory on this site would result in 43 more battles over three years in the state of Missouri. While Confederate troops achieved victory in the field, Union troops were able to inflict enough losses to prevent the Confederate troops’ march North.
