Theodore Roosevelt National Park

One of the most rewarding and interesting outcomes of this journey has been seeing our American history play out across many different locations and time periods. Nowhere is this more evident than with the work of our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt. Over the past year, I was able to visit his home in New York City, the island monument dedicated to him in Washington, DC, and the national park that bears his name. Often referred to as the Conservation President, Roosevelt traveled west with John Muir and recognized that these wild places needed to be protected. Before the National Park Service as we know it today was established, Roosevelt had already protected 230 million acres of public lands and set aside six national parks and 18 national monuments.
